Chapter Eight
A crashing sound woke her, and she jerked upright. On either side of her, Connor and Euan did the same as lights blazed, much too bright to be the simple overhead light. It was disorienting as she struggled to become fully alert and comprehend what was happening. Connor was fumbling on the bedside for something, and she assumed it must be his gun, which was confirmed when an angry voice shouted, “Don’t even think about picking that up.”
She gasped when she recognized the voice, immediately reaching for the sheet with which to cover herself. “Dante?”
“I’m here, sis.”
“Come here,” said Larenz, her oldest brother. His tone indicated he didn’t even consider the possibility she might refuse.
She crossed her arms over her chest and shook her head. “I’m not getting up.”
From the peripheral of the bright light shining on them, Armo stepped into view, thrusting out a shirt hanging from the end of the rifle pointed in Euan’s direction. “Give her that to put on.”
She took Euan’s shirt, recognizing his scent as she pulled it over herself as discreetly as possible, thankful when her lovers held the sheet for her to give her some modesty. Once she wore it, she still made no move to leave the bed.
“Come over here,” said Dom.
She shook her head.
“Why not?” asked Dante, sounding frustrated. “You’re dressed enough.”
She narrowed her eyes, struggling to see through the bright haze. She couldn’t make out faces, but she could identify forms and counted roughly ten people in the room. Judging from Armo’s outfit, they must’ve raided the SWAT team’s closet, though clearly they weren’t cops. Cops would have warned them not to move and announced themselves as police. She stared at them in confusion for a moment before shielding her eyes. “Move that damn light off me.”
Armo chuckled. “Pleasant as ever, Sophia.”
“Cut her some slack,” said Larenz firmly. “She’s been through hell.”
A moment later, the light clicked off, and it was just the overhead light in the bedroom. After her eyes acclimated, she looked at Dom, who was usually the ringleader, though her brothers all shared the responsibilities of their positions. “What are you doing here?”
“We’re rescuing you, so you need to get out of the way and let us deal with your kidnappers.”
She laughed. “My kidnappers? Where did you hear that?”
Dante stepped closer, frowning. “Your grandfather,” he almost spat the word, “Told us you’d been kidnapped. Apparently, your fiancé had hidden the knowledge from him for a few days. I’d like a few words with Victor while I’m at it.”
She snorted. “Victor’s not my fiancé, and Thaddeus Thorne isn’t my grandfather. Biologically he is, but that’s it. They’re not my family. You guys are. Mom is,” she added softly as her voice broke.
Armo came closer, his expression one of sympathy. “Mom’s missed you.”
She nodded. “I’ve missed her too.” It was the first time she’d really allowed herself to admit it, and she realized how badly she had screwed up by turning away from her parents without allowing them to give her an explanation.
